Pair leave competition for dust
SIMON and Sue Evans are the Australian rally champions for the fourth time after another convincing win, this time in Rally Queensland on the Sunshine Coast last weekend.
The Subaru crew were never remotely challenged in an event which doubled as a round of the Asia-Pacific Rally Championship, a category won by Indian driver Gaurav Gill and New Zealand co-driver Glenn Macneall, who were more than two minutes behind the Evans duo.
Victorian brothers Glen and Matt Raymond, running a Mitsubishi Lancer on a wildcard entry, were second. The Raymonds also won the second round of the Pacific Cup, which ends in New Caledonia at the end of this month.
The factory Proton R3 Malaysia team of Queenslander Chris Atkinson and Scotland’s Alister McRae both had to retire from the rally.
Atkinson won six of the first day’s eight stages and five on Monday, but was unable to figure in the official classification after his motor stalled in a creek crossing. British Rally Champion McRae won four stages but retired with mechanical problems.
In form: Simon and Sue Evans had another convincing win at the Rally Queensland.
