Focus turns to performance
HOT hatch hopefuls will have a new benchmark later this year when Ford lands a Focus RS with a stonking 225kW and 440Nm.
The engine’s output trumps the 217kW of the Lancer Evo and even the 221kW in Subaru’s STi Impreza. It’s only front-wheel drive but has a special Quaife differential to distribute torque to the driving wheels. The price is already set at $59,990 and just over 300 cars will be available to local buyers.
Ford spokesman Peter Fadeyev says: ‘‘We have 315 cars, confirmed. That’s the total allocation for Australia.’’
The Focus RS will sit above the $36,490 XR5 with a turbocharged five-cylinder engine — shared with Volvo — that makes 166kW/320 Nm.
‘‘It’s an addition. It’s a limited-edition car based on Ford’s World Rally Car program,’’ Fadeyev says.
The Focus RS is expected in August and is fitted with everything from Recaro sports bucket seats to rally-style front and rear spoilers.
