Towing the line

AN ELECTRIC towing tractor is being released by Toyota Material Handling Australia. The company will aim at airlines, courier firms and companies with large factories with the 1.8-tonne draw bar pull 2TE18 towing tractor. It can tow up to 25,000kg and uses inverter and AC motor technology from Toyota’s 3.5-tonne payload battery electric forklift range. Toyota says the energy usage cost of the electric model is one fifth of a comparable diesel model and has half the greenhouse impact. The tractor recovers energy when slowing, coasting and changing direction by using regenerative braking. Company brand manager Bob Walmsley (above) says the electric tractor is better for the environment and brings occupational health-and-safety benefits compared with a diesel tractor.
