A START-UP electric van maker is the first company to benefit from a new venture capital operation by US car giant General Motors. Indiana-based Bright Automotive will give GM an ownership stake in the company in return for $5 million as it develops an electric van it is now looking to produce in 2013 or 2014. It says it plans to produce 50,000 of the vans, called the Bright Idea, each year. The van has an electric motor for the rear wheels and a small petrol engine linked to the front wheels. The petrol engine kicks in when the battery is low, to generate electricity for it, and can take over when the battery is depleted.
