Driver alert on TV apps

MO­BILE de­vice ap­pli­ca­tions that stream videos have caught the at­ten­tion of law­mak­ers.

Chan­nel 7 this week said it planned to re­lease ap­pli­ca­tions for iPhone, iPad and An­droid de­vices to watch its

pro­gram. The apps al­low the pro­gram to be down­loaded and watched live or de­layed, in­clud­ing when driv­ing.

But leg­is­la­tion pro­hibits a ‘‘tele­vi­sion re­ceiver or vis­ual dis­play unit’’ that can be seen by the driver.

Ex­cep­tions are driver aids, in­clud­ing satel­lite nav­i­ga­tion and re­vers­ing cam­eras.
