Re­cov­ery signs

With three quar­ters of the year gone, the new truck in­dus­try is show­ing signs of re­cov­ery, but not in all ar­eas. VFACTS sales re­sults to the end of Septem­ber re­veal some truck seg­ments are bounc­ing back. The light duty class, cov­er­ing trucks and vans with GVM of 3500kg to 7500kg, was the strong­est with year to date sales up by 10.9 per cent on last year. Isuzu’s N-Se­ries was again the clear win­ner with 2755 sales this year from Mercedes-Benz with 1663 Sprinter sales. Heavy trucks, with a GVM of 15,000kg or more, grew slowly with year to date sales up by 3.4 per cent de­spite Septem­ber sales dip­ping 3.8 per cent on Septem­ber 2009. As ex­pected, Ken­worth is dom­i­nat­ing with 1463 sold this year, well in front of Volvo Truck with 728. Sales of mid-size trucks, with a GVM of 7500kg to 15,000kg, are down a con­sid­er­able 7.6 per cent and van sales are stag­nant.
