THE Volt will not go alone on GM’s rangeextender program. The company is already working on a people mover with the same powerplant technology and there will be other cars to tap the technology.

The chairman of General Motors, Dan Akerson, confirmed a Volt-style mini-van ‘‘in the next few years’’ during the Detroit motor show, and said Volt production is set at 25,000 cars in 2011.

That’s more than double the original plan for 10,000 and beyond Akerson’s updated prediction of 20,000 late in 2010.

‘‘We have been pleased and a bit surprised with the initial demands, initial orders for Volts. We don’t want to miss the opportunity,’’ Akerson said.

Volt: production is set at 25,000.
