CARS and driv­ers ar­rive at an Ade­laide CBD ser­vice sta­tion just be­fore dawn to have their fuel tanks filled to the brim. Then we head north in a Holden Cruze and a Mit­subishi ASX, look­ing to see how much fuel these ve­hi­cles will use in 1000km of coun­try cruis­ing.

Our ex­pert driver, Ed Or­dyn­ski, is in the ASX and I have the Cruze.

As we start out the Cruze trip com­puter is read­ing just over 6 litres/100km.

Or­dyn­ski says the ASX is read­ing just be­low 5 litres/100km.

The first stop is near Port Pirie af­ter 250km and the fig­ures are 5.3 and 4.2 as we battle wind and rain.

Westop for lunch at Waik­erie, about 530km into the jour­ney, then turn south to fol­low the Mur­ray
