Oilers ain’t oilers

Hear the purists howl — this Porsche runs on diesel

Herald Sun - Motoring - - Prestige - BruceMcMahon

PORSCHE, once a maker of tractors, has long scoffed at the idea of burning oil in its sports machines. Diesel fuel just wouldn’t suit the Porsche character, said the bosses.

But then the Cayenne SUV opened the door a tad when a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 diesel joined the range. And the market now demands diesel sedan variants, even among premium marques.

So here comes a Panamera diesel, claimed to use just 6.5L/100km— below the Australian government’s green target of 7L. That means a reduction in the Luxury Car Tax and a $5300 benefit’’ to the customer.

The first deliveries are expected in September, at $194,900.

The twin turbo 3.0-litre produces 184kW and 550Nm, combining with an eight-speed Tiptronic transmission to push the diesel to a respectable 0 to 100km/h time of 6.8 seconds on to a top speed of 242km/h.

For long-distance touring, A full tank could take the diesel beyond 1200km.
