Electric cars are here to stay. We preview several in this green-themed edition, coinciding with World Environment Day on June 5. The day of the ‘‘EV’’ would have seemed remote to the boffins viewing the Exide Sundancer (above), a 6kW experimental electric car at the First Symposium on Low Pollution Power Systems Development in the US in 1973. Last month’s Michelin Challenge Bibendum, attended by our own Karla Pincott, presented more than 150 driveable cars powered by electricity and alternative fuels. The event has become the world’s leading green vehicle showcase with car makers, scientists and students highlighting advances in fuels and engine efficiency. Sadly, the Sundancer MkII failed to show . . . but there’s always next time.
