The com­pact SUV seg­ment is one of the most com­pet­i­tive new car cat­e­gories to­talling 23 mod­els..The most re­cent ar­rivals were Chinese brands Ch­ery and Great Wall, with the Ch­ery J11 start­ing be­low $20,000.

Holden’s re­vamped Cap­tiva has been split into 5 and 7, the lat­ter now clas­si­fied as a medium SUV. Mazda’s CX-7 is not suited for any­thing be­yond A-grade dirt road but in­cludes front-wheel drive petrol and all-wheel drive diesel op­tions.

Mit­subishi of­fers the Out­lander and ASX in front and all-wheel drive. The for­mer has no diesel op­tion, the lat­ter does but it’s man­ual only. Subaru has the same prob­lem with the Forester and it’s a draw­back in this auto ad­dicted mar­ket­place.

Nis­san’s X-Trail and Dualis come in front and all-wheel drive but the Dualis is less in­clined for off-road ac­tiv­ity.

Skoda re­cently launched the Oc­tavia Scout, with a tur­bod­iesel and DSG gear­box.
