A compact SUV battleground
The compact SUV segment is one of the most competitive new car categories totalling 23 models..The most recent arrivals were Chinese brands Chery and Great Wall, with the Chery J11 starting below $20,000.
Holden’s revamped Captiva has been split into 5 and 7, the latter now classified as a medium SUV. Mazda’s CX-7 is not suited for anything beyond A-grade dirt road but includes front-wheel drive petrol and all-wheel drive diesel options.
Mitsubishi offers the Outlander and ASX in front and all-wheel drive. The former has no diesel option, the latter does but it’s manual only. Subaru has the same problem with the Forester and it’s a drawback in this auto addicted marketplace.
Nissan’s X-Trail and Dualis come in front and all-wheel drive but the Dualis is less inclined for off-road activity.
Skoda recently launched the Octavia Scout, with a turbodiesel and DSG gearbox.
