With only 599 built, the fastest road-going Ferrari has echoes of two high-performance namesakes

IT GETS to 100km/h from rest quicker than you can say its name, can be washed only with a virgin’s tears and is worth more than a million bucks.

Well, only the third thing is strictly true of the 10 Ferrari 599 GTOs allocated for Australasian sale but the rest of it is frighteningly close to reality.

Given the Maranello maker’s fetish for numbers, only 599 GTOs have been made – and all have been sold.

The GTO is the fastest road car produced by the supercar marque, having lapped the Fiorano Ferrari test track in one minute, 14 seconds – quicker than any road car. It can do the 0-100km/h sprint in an eye-blinking 3.35 seconds. We’d say ‘‘ paint-peeling’’ but the bespoke matt black finish of the car pictured here (the only one of the local 10) is so sensitive it must be hand-cleaned with distilled water.

Even the prancing pony badge is black. It’s as if it were made for Spinal Tap: it could be ‘‘ none blacker’’.

The 599 weighs in at only 1495kg and its 6.0-litre V12 produces 500kW/620Nm. This makes for an exceptional power to weight ratio, in excess of 330kW per tonne.

Ferrari claims there is an ‘‘ almost total absence of understeer’’ and there are new
