Why do they hold so­lar-pow­ered ve­hi­cle chal­lenges in in­hos­pitable places where cars rarely ever go? Why aren’t so­lar tests held on city streets? Why not a se­ries of chal­lenges, such as driv­ing to work, pick­ing up the kids from school? There was plenty of time to pon­der these and other big ques­tions for the pi­lot of Puerto Rico’s en­try in the Ata­cama so­lar chal­lenge, along with: Where are the doors? And how did I get roped into this? Thirty teams from seven coun­tries com­peted in the 1060km, three-day event in north­ern Chile.
