Pimp, don’t scrimp
Wealth and taste don’t always go together, writes Mark Hinchliffe
1 Simon Cowell — Bugatti Veyron These cost about $2 million and are among the fastest production cars on the planet with a top speed of 431km/h, launching to 100km/h from rest in 2.5 seconds. The TV ‘‘ talent show’’ judge has a good eye for a car and his garage also houses a Ferrari F430 and Rolls-royce Phantom. He’s paid a deposit for the Rolls-royce 100EX Cabriolet. 2 Jay Leno — Duesenbergs One of the world’s most expensive cars and most sought after by Hollywood legends over the years is the US luxury brand Duesenberg. Bigjawed talk show host Leno has one of the biggest stables of exotic cars in the world, including six Deusenbergs, each worth more than $1.5 million. 3 David Beckham — Custom Rolls-royce Phantom Drophead The V12-powered Roller is worth about $1.3 million in ‘‘ standard’’ trim. There is nothing understated about this Roller for the world’s most over- rated footballer. His shirt number, 23, is embroidered on to the leather seats. 4 Jerry Seinfeld — Porsche 959 The comic built a $1.4 million multistorey garage to house his 46-car collection, mostly Porsches. The most expensive is his rare 959, of which 337 were built and only 200 of those were street legal. Bill Gates has one, too. 5 Jay Z and Beyonce — Maybach Exelero Rapper Shawn Corey Carter (Jay Z) and Beyonce Knowles paid about $8 million for this one-off luxury car. Maybach is building the Batmobile-esque cars for general sale. The 350km/h two-seaters are powered by a 522kw twin-turbo V12. The Exelero features in Jay Z’s Lost One video.
Rich pickings: (Clockwise from top left) Seinfeld and Porsche; Becks and Roller; Cowell and Bugatti; Lauren and Ferrari.
