Take it away, Takeri

In 2002, the original Mazda6 revived and rejuvenated the mid-size segment — this is what will do it again. Here’s a new look at the Takeri concept, unveiled this week at the Tokyo motor show. It’s not at all far from the completed car (known at the moment as the CD sedan) so expect something close to this styling when it gets here perhaps by late next year but more likely 2013. Don’t doubt Mazda’s intentions and remember how faithful the coming CX-5 is to its concept. If Motofoto is being unusually earnest, it’s because even we are struck perversely sober not only by the Takeri’s outrageous lines but also the tangible prospect of the 2.2-litre turbo diesel Skyactive engine, with i-stop idling system and I-LOOP regenerative braking, for Mazda6 dollars. Amid the plethora of Tokyo exhibits that are little more than novelty lifestyle aids and toys, here’s something to which we can look forward.
