Another year, another blizzard of new cars. We not only list the lot, we pick the best for all budgets and tastes

BMW3 Series

Everything in the prestige world spins around the 3 Series, even if Benz is doing better with its C-class. The all-new 3 delivers more luxury and refinement, with a return to familiar styling, plus a smarter pricing policy, from $60,900 for a 320d. The entry turbo petrol 320i arrives mid-year.

Ford Falcon four

Ford has to persuade heartland buyers that an Ecoboost Falcon can really work for them in a class where big sixes have done best. It’s the most important car of 2012 — one way or the other.

Hyundai Veloster

Korean cars now come with class, so the question is: how does Hyundai do a 21stcentury sports car? The Veloster has a quirky three-door body and the promise of driving enjoyment. Pity it won’t be tweaked into a Kia for Australia.
