WOOLIES RAPPED

WOOLWORTHS has copped a knock for a sales promotion linking drinking with driving. A deal in which buyers of two cases of beer or pre-mixed spirits got a 30 cents-a-litre fuel discount is described as ‘‘ a step too far’’ and

‘‘ troubling’’ by the Australian Automobile Association, with AAA boss Andrew Mckellar calling for Woolworths to take a ‘‘ shared responsibility on road safety’’.

BIT OF A MARK-UP

A CHRYSLER 300C once reportedly owned by President Barack Obama is for sale— with a $1 million price tag. The car was said to have been Obama’s ride when he was a senator in Illinois.

BLOWN THISWAY

ECOBOOST engines such as the one coming to the Ford Falcon this year are spreading fast through the Ford line-up, with the company planning to triple its production capacity to feed 11 individual models. Ford built 127,883 Ecoboost vehicles in the US last year and intends to add the new Escape (coming to

Australia) Fusion, Focus and police Interceptor to the line-up in America this year.

THE DIRECT ROUTE

EFFICIENT common-rail fuel injection is spreading fast, with Bosch reporting production of its 75 millionth system. The high-pressure system was first used 14 years ago and is claimed by the company to have been a game-changer for new-age turbo diesel engines.

COSTLY EXPOSURE

CAR companies will pay up to $3.5m for a 30-second ad on the American Super Bowl broadcast on Monday. Among them will be lingerie model Adriana Lima in a 60-second ad for Kia Optima.
