The turbo petrol en­gine, which acts as a gen­er­a­tor for the lithium-ion bat­ter­ies, is not me­chan­i­cally con­nected to the wheels so does not drive the car.

One source close to Fisker says the At­lantic can cover 80km in elec­tric ‘‘stealth’’ mode and a fur­ther 400km with the petrol en­gine en­gaged, while bet­ter­ing the fuel econ­omy of the Toy­ota Prius, 3.9L/100km. The At­lantic is ex­pected to go on sale in about two years, cost­ing from about $60,000 for the rear-drive ver­sion and more than $65,000 for the 4WD.
