It’s as German as Big Ben

Ellesmere Port builds Astras badged as Vauxhalls. The Astra has been made at Russelsheim in Germany since last year and previously was made in Belgium, Britain, Poland and Russia.

The German plant last year built 18,300 examples out of the European total of 328,900 Astras.

Opel is putting on a brave face. CEO Karl-friedrich Stracke says Russelsheim, the only plant building Insignias, is one of Opel’s most modern sites.

‘‘We expect further improvements in efficiency, which would lead to additional investments,’’ he says.

reports Gmexecutives as saying there is a glut of manufacturing capacity in the European car industry and ‘‘one or two plants’’ could be in line to close.

Opel will launch the Astra range in Australia in August, in company with the Insignia sedan and wagon and Corsa light car.
