big rigs back

HEAVY truck sales champion Kenworth has bounced back from a tough 2011, recording a surge of almost 40 per cent.

VFACTS figures show the truck manufacturer based in the Melbourne suburb of Bayswater sold just 759 trucks in the first half of last year. It fared much better this year, with sales clicking over to 1046 at the end of June.

The 37.8 per cent lift is from increased demand across the range and a big jump in deliveries of its new K200 cab-over. The absence of the K-series for much of last year has been cited as one reason Kenworth had been hurting.

Sales for all heavy trucks (of 15,000kg or more including load) are up by 20.5 per cent compared to the same period in 2011.

Truck sales are seen as a weather vane for the economy, the numbers suggesting growing confidence.
