Eccentric Uncle Tim’s buy of the week

Herald Sun - Motoring - - First Drive -

TIRED of waiting for delivery of your two-door, 2.0-litre, four-cylinder Toyota 86? Then wait no more! Carsguide lists an earlier Toyota model that just about equals the specs of the new must-have coupe at a fraction of the price. This 1982 Celica is listed at just $5990, about one-sixth of the ask for a la-de-da 86. To answer a few obvious questions: YES, it may be slightly slower than an 86. But it has cool tilt-forward headlights, so shut up. YES, the Celica wasn’t a noted handler even by the standards of the early 1980s. But it’s available right now, unlike a certain come-back-in-2013 coupe I’m too polite to name. YES, it’s basically an old Corona with two fewer doors. Check the interior, though: velour seats! Try ticking that option box today, Miss 86 Buyer. NO, it isn’t retro-cool yet. Wait five years or until your 86 turns up, whichever is sooner. Cars
