The po­tent S60 out­does ri­vals in safety and per­for­mance

WHAT­word springs to mind when you hear the word ‘‘ Volvo’’? Safe? Se­cure? Slow?

Volvo has built its busi­ness and its rep­u­ta­tion on de­vel­op­ing and pro­duc­ing some of the world’s safest ve­hi­cles and car safety sys­tems.

Its most re­cent ac­co­lade was the top score in the In­sur­ance In­sti­tute for High­way Safety’s (IIHS) new frontal crash test in the US, which repli­cates a head-on col­li­sion with a power pole or tree at 64km/h. Only two other cars of 11 passed and we don’t get them here (Acura TL and In­finiti G).

BMW’s 3 Se­ries and Volk­swa­gen’s CC were classed ‘‘ mar­ginal’’ and, most sur­pris­ingly, the MercedesBenz C-Class, Lexus IS and Audi A4 were rated ‘‘ poor’’. You can ar­gue all you like about the method­ol­ogy but Volvo’s S60 top-of-the-class re­sult is redo­lent not so much of the woolly cardi­gan but a suit of Kevlar.
