The potent S60 outdoes rivals in safety and performance
WHATword springs to mind when you hear the word ‘‘ Volvo’’? Safe? Secure? Slow?
Volvo has built its business and its reputation on developing and producing some of the world’s safest vehicles and car safety systems.
Its most recent accolade was the top score in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) new frontal crash test in the US, which replicates a head-on collision with a power pole or tree at 64km/h. Only two other cars of 11 passed and we don’t get them here (Acura TL and Infiniti G).
BMW’s 3 Series and Volkswagen’s CC were classed ‘‘ marginal’’ and, most surprisingly, the MercedesBenz C-Class, Lexus IS and Audi A4 were rated ‘‘ poor’’. You can argue all you like about the methodology but Volvo’s S60 top-of-the-class result is redolent not so much of the woolly cardigan but a suit of Kevlar.
