Slick Swede should have lots of go to match its show
THE newest pocket-rocket from Sweden surges into showrooms next year.
Volvo says the V40 R-Design will be released along with the mainstream V40 range early in 2013— an unusual move, as performance variants generally follow the lesser cars by some months.
The R-Design model will be limited to the T5 drivetrain, meaning a turbo petrol engine good for a rousing 187kW and 360Nm (400Nm on overboost) to get to 100km/h from standing in 6.5 seconds. The R-Design tops a range of V40s starting with a 1.6-litre fourcylinder turbo diesel (manual), on to a 2.0-litre 130kW/400Nm turbo diesel and a 2.0-litre 132kW/300Nm turbo petrol that comes only with an auto.
Volvo Australia’s Oliver Peagam says the brand is finetuning the line-up and pricing. ‘‘ Historically we’ve only had an R-Design on the T5 and T6 engines. I think we’ll be maintaining that,’’ he says.
The R-Design’s snout has been altered with a new glossy ‘‘ silk-metal’’ grille, with the same finish on other exterior trim, as well as an ‘‘ ironstone’’ rear diffuser, twin exhausts and 18-inch ‘‘ diamond cut’’ alloy wheels. Its six colours include the pictured Rebel Blue.
The cabin gets the mainstream V40’s new dashboard, with three layout choices, Elegance, Eco and Performance. The difference in the R-Design is that all three carry the blue theme.
Seating is upgraded but Volvo says it is still clearly a Scandinavian design— leather and nubuck trimmed with an R-Design logo, or optional full-leather pew. The cabin also gets model-specific steering wheel, gear shift, handbrake and sports pedals, as well as aluminium trim.
‘‘ The V40 R-Design is designed around the performance-minded individual with a passion for the things that add extra spice to life,’’ Volvo Car product strategy senior vice president Lex Kerssemakers says.
The hottie has what Volvo calls a heavily modified version of the Ford Focus platform, with the Sport suspension set up 10mm lower than the regular V40. Swedish race ace Robert Dahlgren and the Volvo Polestar Black R team collaborated in this.
