Thus is the new­comer the in­stant range-top­per, the fastest and most fuel ef­fi­cient petrol 3 Se­ries? A 7 Se­ries ver­sion is also en route

To the al­ready for­mi­da­ble blown six is added a 40kW elec­tric mo­tor be­tween the engine and trans­mis­sion. The lithium-ion bat­tery is in­te­grated in the lug­gage area which— this be­ingBMWwith run-flat tyres— is not com­pro­mised by a spare wheel.

Power goes, of course, to the rear wheels and it gets them go­ing quicker.

The 0-100km/h time is a mere 5.3 sec­onds— a de­cent 0.3 sec un­der the con­ven­tional 335i and the fastest time of any pro­duc­tion hy­brid.

The Ac­tiveHy­brid3’s point of de­par­ture is in the pro­vi­sion of purely elec­tric, car­bon-free pace at up to 75km/ h and av­er­age juice use of 5.6L/100km. The bat­tery charges dur­ing brak­ing and coast­ing, while un­der ac­cel­er­a­tion the elec­tric mo­tor pro­vides ex­tra and over­boost.
