Under the skin

We’re set to drive the new Benz flagship in early July but don’t have to wait that long to see exactly how it looks. Carparazzi caught the S without a skerrick of camouflage and with the promise of a Magic Ride Control system that uses cameras to watch the road ahead and instantly adjusts the suspension to suit.

WHAT IS IT? Mercedes-Benz S-Class WHYTHE FUSS? Only the world’s best car WHEN’S IT HERE? Early next year HOWMUCH? At least $200,000 Audi is readying an updated flagship to face the S-Class but the body changes are very minor and the cabin is also staying much as it is today. The big differences are likely to be more technology and efficiency improvements in the drive train. We’ve just seen the Golf GTI but that’s not the end of the performance story for Golf 7. Volkswagen is well into testing the Golf R, the turbocharged all-wheel drive headliner that gets 205kW and a 0-100km/h time better than 6.0 seconds. The latest on the new Range Rover line-up is the extendedwheel base model, which is being tested at the Nurburgring. The big question now is whether the cabin contains seven seats or the extra space just translates to additional rear legroom.
