Venture into supercar territory with Benz’s true topless grand tourer
IN THE rarefied realms of supercar buying, it comes down to style. The Mercedes SL65 AMG has that in spades, with a pedigree that can’t be rivalled.
The $466,500 roadster’s rivals, Aston Martin’s V12 Vanquish and the Ferrari California, are line-ball in price terms. Standard gear includes Bang & Olufsen audio, TV tuner and a hi-res reversing camera, plus the usual luxuries, including Airscarf neck warmer and satnav.
Ignore the biturbo V12 and seven-speed auto and the SL is loaded with some of Benz’s best techno-toys: adaptive cruise control, blind-spot and lane-departure warning.
The instrument cluster is an AMG two-tube design with the TFT multifunction display nestled in between.
There’s little need to describe the engine beyond saying it is the most hostile weapon in the AMG armoury, kept in check by a default set of composite brakes.
