Ven­ture into su­per­car ter­ri­tory with Benz’s true top­less grand tourer

IN THE rar­efied realms of su­per­car buy­ing, it comes down to style. The Mercedes SL65 AMG has that in spades, with a pedi­gree that can’t be ri­valled.


The $466,500 road­ster’s ri­vals, As­ton Martin’s V12 Van­quish and the Fer­rari Cal­i­for­nia, are line-ball in price terms. Stan­dard gear in­cludes Bang & Olufsen au­dio, TV tuner and a hi-res re­vers­ing cam­era, plus the usual lux­u­ries, in­clud­ing Airs­carf neck warmer and sat­nav.


Ig­nore the biturbo V12 and seven-speed auto and the SL is loaded with some of Benz’s best techno-toys: adap­tive cruise con­trol, blind-spot and lane-de­par­ture warn­ing.

The in­stru­ment clus­ter is an AMG two-tube de­sign with the TFT mul­ti­func­tion dis­play nes­tled in be­tween.

There’s lit­tle need to de­scribe the engine be­yond say­ing it is the most hos­tile weapon in the AMG ar­moury, kept in check by a de­fault set of com­pos­ite brakes.
