Plug-in hybrid technology is appearing increasingly in SUVs. The Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid can give you 50km of petrol-free driving on each overnight charge. But it’s much more expensive (a premium of about $9000) than the equivalent petrol version and the cost benefit depends on charging off peak, and short commutes (to avoid petrol use). The Nissan Pathfinder hybrid ($3000 dearer than the standard version) is the middle ground. The diesel VW Touareg is a full-size SUV that is classy and frugal. The hidden gem is the Mazda CX-5. No hybrid technology. Regular fuel. Cheapest to buy.
