IT’S ON THE PACE
JAGUAR is leaping on the SUV bandwagon with a midsized model to compete with the likes of Audi’s SQ5 and the Porsche Macan. The F-Pace will break cover at the Frankfurt motor show in September riding on the company’s aluminium-intensive architecture and sharing engines with other Jaguars.
Jaguar Australia’s Tim Krieger says the crossover could be in Australia by late next year, borrowing from Land Rover’s all-wheel-drive expertise. However, he says, it won’t come close to being a competitor.
“The product has to line up to the brand promise (of space, grace and pace),” he says. “It’s not about (off-road) capability — that is Land Rover’s position. It’s a different animal … but our customers clearly want that configuration.
“Given our core competitors are playing in the (SUV) space, there is an expectation that to be a modern premium brand you need to be there.”
