Triple treat comes of age

Triumph’s streetfighter gets fresh bling to mark its 21 years

IT IS 21 years since the Speed Triple 900 first tore up the tarmac. To celebrate its coming of age, Triumph has launched a pair of retro-liveried machines complete with the original decals and a commemorative tank badge.

Yep, the 94 and 94R are basically blinged-up versions of the existing Speed Triple and Speed Triple R models, aimed at keeping the best-selling bike in buyer’s minds until a major update in 2017.

There are no mechanical upgrades to get excited about and the love-’em-or-hate-’em insect eye headlamps are retained. Despite that, the Speed Triple is one of the most engaging streetfighters on the block, even if it is starting to show its age against the newer competition.

These days the Speed Triple is a 1050cc triple-cylinder engine with a unique sound and look. It doesn’t use electronic aids beyond anti-lock brakes and that’s just fine for those who aren’t intent on racing into the record books.

The engine is tuned for low and mid-range torque and it will keep up with the in-line four-cylinder machines until it is time to wring their throttles on a long straight.

The chassis is an alloy trellis matched to Showa suspension and Brembo brakes up front. The 94R upgrades include fully adjustable Ohlins suspension, Brembo monobloc front anchors and Pirelli Supercorsa SP tyres.

Pillion comfort is good but there’s an optional gel seat. Those in need of a sleeker look can specify an Arrow “lowboy” three-into-one exhaust to replace the standard twin pipes.

The special edition will tide Triumph over until the 2017 model arrives with a lighter chassis and upgraded performance. Spy shots show what looks like an air-ram mounted in the bug deflector screen above the headlights

Pricing for the special edition bikes, to be sold in black or yellow livery, has yet to be announced.

Expect a premium on the regular models, which start at $19,990 for the standard Speed Triple.
