Triple treat comes of age

Tri­umph’s street­fighter gets fresh bling to mark its 21 years

IT IS 21 years since the Speed Triple 900 first tore up the tar­mac. To cel­e­brate its com­ing of age, Tri­umph has launched a pair of retro-liv­er­ied ma­chines com­plete with the orig­i­nal de­cals and a com­mem­o­ra­tive tank badge.

Yep, the 94 and 94R are ba­si­cally blinged-up ver­sions of the ex­ist­ing Speed Triple and Speed Triple R mod­els, aimed at keep­ing the best-sell­ing bike in buyer’s minds un­til a ma­jor up­date in 2017.

There are no me­chan­i­cal up­grades to get ex­cited about and the love-’em-or-hate-’em in­sect eye head­lamps are re­tained. De­spite that, the Speed Triple is one of the most en­gag­ing street­fight­ers on the block, even if it is start­ing to show its age against the newer com­pe­ti­tion.

Th­ese days the Speed Triple is a 1050cc triple-cylin­der en­gine with a unique sound and look. It doesn’t use elec­tronic aids be­yond anti-lock brakes and that’s just fine for those who aren’t in­tent on rac­ing into the record books.

The en­gine is tuned for low and mid-range torque and it will keep up with the in-line four-cylin­der ma­chines un­til it is time to wring their throt­tles on a long straight.

The chas­sis is an al­loy trel­lis matched to Showa sus­pen­sion and Brembo brakes up front. The 94R up­grades in­clude fully ad­justable Oh­lins sus­pen­sion, Brembo monobloc front an­chors and Pirelli Su­per­corsa SP tyres.

Pil­lion com­fort is good but there’s an op­tional gel seat. Those in need of a sleeker look can spec­ify an Ar­row “low­boy” three-into-one ex­haust to re­place the stan­dard twin pipes.

The spe­cial edi­tion will tide Tri­umph over un­til the 2017 model ar­rives with a lighter chas­sis and up­graded per­for­mance. Spy shots show what looks like an air-ram mounted in the bug de­flec­tor screen above the head­lights

Pric­ing for the spe­cial edi­tion bikes, to be sold in black or yel­low livery, has yet to be an­nounced.

Ex­pect a pre­mium on the regular mod­els, which start at $19,990 for the stan­dard Speed Triple.
