A turbo Ignis is a priority for Suzuki Australia. The candidate is the 1.0-litre three-cylinder in the Baleno. In that tune it cranks out 82kW/160Nm and would give the Ignis a sportier appeal. Suzuki Australia general manager Andrew Moore says head office in Japan knows of our national predilection for warmer variants. “We’re pushing hard for a turbo Ignis,” Moore says. “From our perspective it just makes sense but there has to be enough global interest to make a business case. I’d probably keep the 1.2-litre in the GL and put the turbo in the GLX.” Moore cites the Vitara SUV as the most recent example of buyers backing performance versions. “I thought the turbo might do 40 per cent of Vitara sales and it’s doing half,” he says. “We’ve got a new Swift later this year and we know how strong demand is for the Sports version of that car, so the appetite for a more powerful Ignis should be at similar levels.”
