My son is looking to buy an SUV to take on dirt tracks for bike riding and surfing, with a budget of $30-35,000. He is happy to look at new or near-new. Does he need diesel rather than petrol due to the reduced risk of fire from long grass on the middle of dirt tracks, or is this not a big concern with modern vehicles? He likes Subaru and has looked at Mitsubishi ASX, Mazda CX-5, Nissan X-Trail, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, while RAV4s seem too expensive. He has also seen the Mitsubishi Triton GLX 4x4 diesel at $35,990 driveaway but is concerned about the long-distance highway driveability of a ute. Phil Tenison, email

If he likes Subaru then a Forester should be ideal and gets The Tick from me. I have yet to hear of a car exhaust starting a fire on a bush track, so petrol power will be fine.
