JEEP BREACH CLAIMS

More than 100,000 diesel ve­hi­cles, mostly Jeep Grand Chero­kees, are be­ing mod­i­fied in the US af­ter claims by leg­is­la­tors they breach emis­sions reg­u­la­tions with soft­ware rem­i­nis­cent of that used by Volk­swa­gen on its Diesel-gate cars. FCA Aus­tralia will nei­ther con­firm nor deny any im­pli­ca­tions for Jeeps in Aus­tralia.

COSTLY FU­TURE

Fu­ture-proof­ing the com­pany is cost­ing Toy­ota more than $10 bil­lion a year in re­search-and-de­vel­op­ment bills. The Ja­panese maker has boosted its R&D spend­ing on ev­ery­thing from au­tonomous and elec­tric cars to the fac­to­ries to build them.

NUM­BERS GAME

The num­ber “29” cost some­one a record $745,000 for the his­toric black-and­white NSW plate. The price at the Shan­nons Au­tumn Clas­sic auc­tion topped the pre­vi­ous record of $689,000, set two years ago for NSW “2”, with the plate’s his­tory traced back to a 1915 Min­erva.
