Takata, maker of millions of potentially lethal defective airbags, has filed for bankruptcy amid mounting claims for damages from car makers. Its airbags can spray shrapnel when activated and have been linked to at least 16 deaths worldwide. More than 1.4 million airbags have been recalled in Australia.
A RAW DEAL
GM says selling Opel will cost it more than originally thought. The latest estimates is that it will take $7.24bn to offload its struggling German offshoot to France’s PSA Group. Much of the cost is tied up with pension liabilities.
LOOK NO HANDS
Jaguar Land Rover has trialled an autonomous Range Rover Sport that reaches a destination without human input. Its special proving ground in the UK has roundabouts, traffic lights and T-junctions. It plans tests on real roads — closed to the public — later this year and full open road trials next year.
