Old pub opts for a new, stylish Pace

SOUTH Yarra’s Argo Hotel will host a crowd of a different sort in its new guise as a boutique apartment block. Architects from Rothelowman are charged with turning the old pub into a 39-unit development.

Pace Development Group is building Argo Apartments, which will offer one and two-bedroom units in a location close to boutiques, cafes and Fawkner Park.

An integrated builder and developer, Pace specialises in medium-density projects. In 2010 it won HIA Victorian Apartment Project of the Year for its Nautica development in Sandringham.

Beller Project Marketing director Damon Krongold, who is handling sales at Argo, said Pace’s pedigree was matched by Argo’s setting.

‘‘The apartments are . . . in the heart of South Yarra but it’s a very quiet location in a genuinely peaceful area,’’ Mr Krongold said.

‘‘You can leave the car at home in the basement and walk no more than five minutes to the Prahran Market.

‘‘It offers a plethora of fruit traders and seafood mongers and is like a miniature version of the Queen Victoria Market.’’

In a nod to the site’s history, two ground-floor apartments have individual, bedroom-sized cellars with step-down ladders.

All buyers have a choice of light or dark colour schemes for interior living areas and bathrooms. Other highlights include Bosch stainless-steel appliances, stone benches and polished floorboards. Basement parking and storage cages are standard.

Public transport options include trams on Chapel St and Commercial and Toorak roads and trains at Prahran and South Yarra.

Mr Krongold said demand had been strong and the two-bedroom apartments quickly sold out. Construction is due to start in April. A display suite at 64 Argo St, South Yarra, is open weekends from 2pm4pm. More information is available from Damon Krongold on 0418 850 757. Price range One-bedroom apartments from $419,000
