My favourite things

I have loved cars since I was a little girl, and I think it was partly because I grew up with two older brothers and they passed on their love to me. My entire family has always been obsessed with cars and if I hadn’t become a chef, I would have become a racing car driver. I think I’m a good driver. I drive around India all the time, so if you do that, I think you can drive anywhere. Most westerners hire drivers but I don’t understand that because driving in India is half the fun! This is my XE Jaguar and I bought it about six months ago. Jags are coming back into fashion, but they were pretty underrated in the past. It’s a very smooth car to drive.

I have collected handmade ceramics from wherever I have travelled and these I got in Denmark from (local designers) KH Wurtz. It’s a bit of an obsession of mine. We eat with our eyes first and I think it is really important to have lovely ceramic bowls and plates to eat off. It makes such a big difference. I am the person who, when they go out and the food arrives, is lifting up their plate or bowl to see where it is from. I have so many handmade ceramic plates and bowls that I couldn’t even begin to guess how many are in my cupboard.

Tea is a big part of my life. I will have two cups of English breakfast, as well as a herbal tea before I go to bed. I only started drinking coffee when I recently moved to Melbourne because you pretty much have to! My favourite tea at the moment is masala chai, which they drink in India all the time. They are not much of a nation of coffee drinkers, although I am trying to change that as I have this great coffee machine at the restaurant in Goa. This kettle is very full-on. It has a bird on the end of it that will actually whistle when it boils water. When I first moved into my apartment in Melbourne, I didn’t have a couch, but I made sure I had a kettle from day one.

I love a practical handbag. Because I have a young son, a bag that I can wear across me is even better. This bag is by Alexander Wang and it is the perfect size and holds just the right amount of stuff. I wear it all the time. I tend to buy the same kind of bag and wear it until it wears out and then I will buy another one. I don’t tend to have lots of different bags. They last for a long time, these bags, and once I find something I like, I will stick to that.

I just bought this perfume: Guilty by Gucci. I like to buy a different perfume from each location I go to. It’s a great way of remembering the various cities and countries. I recently went to Dubai, so the Gucci perfume will remind me of that city. I love the way perfume makes you feel.
