FOLLOWING on from and chef and restaurateur Peter Kuruvita is back on SBS with his latest series, (Thursdays, 8.30pm). Kuruvita began his love affair with food and discovered his passion for cooking as a boy watching his grandmother cook in the traditional kitchen of his ancestral home in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
“I loved her approach to food — she taught me the value of cooking with love. She used to say, ‘Don’t bother cooking if you’re not going to put some love into it, because that is the main ingredient’,” he said.
Kuruvita arrived in Australia as an 11-year-old in 1974.
“When I got to Australia, I used to try and swap my exotic sandwiches for a Vegemite sandwich,” he recalled. “My sandwiches then were too out-there and I was embarrassed to bring them out — that would be an outrageous thought today.”
He lives in Noosa with his wife, Karen, and their sons, Jai, 17, Marley, 15, and Taj, 10.
