Kathy’s grand stand on comedy A-list

Herald Sun - Switched On - - Front Page - ERIN McWHIRTER

RED-HAIRED comedian Kathy Griffin landed in viewers’ laps as restaurant critic Vicki Groener in US sitcom Suddenly Susan.

For four years Griffin revelled in the success of the comedy alongside Brooke Shields, propelling her star higher with each passing season.

Though some stars fade into obscurity, the 48-year-old milked the new-found fame for all it was worth and is now known as one of the world’s most popular stand-up comics.

Now, with her own day-in-the-life reality show, a divorce and priceless worldwide publicity thanks to her ‘‘Jesus can suck it’’ remarks during her Emmy acceptance speech two years ago, this straight-shooting comedian knows exactly how to push the buttons of Hollywood’s A-list. You’re known for your dramatic reactions if you don’t win awards. Usually I like to flip out on camera or storm out. Do something that people can be talking about tomorrow at the water cooler. When I watch those shows that’s all I want, is one moment when someone does something inappropriate and damn it, if no one else will provide it then I will. Did you expect D-List to be as intrusive on your personal life? I had no idea that through the course of the show I’d get divorced, my father would pass away and I would go to Iraq. How do you balance the personal with entertainment? The majority of it (dealing with hardship) is off the show. My joke is that they edit me much nicer than I am in real life. I think it’s funny when all these reality stars say, ‘‘I’m not like that, I was edited to look that way’’. I’m like, ‘‘Don’t try that s---with me because I have a reality show’’. Your mother Maggie is quite a character. Was it a given she would be part of the show? It’s a network mandate that my mum is in every episode, which is a bitter pill for me because it’s supposed to be my show. I’m now the sidekick of my own show to my mother. It appears no celebrity is safe (from criticism) on D-List . . . Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Paula Abdul, Barbara Walters . . . Hollywood is the gift that keeps on giving. Have any of them confronted you about your comments? Oh yeah, Whitney Houston shook her cracky finger in my face and told me never to talk about her.
