A torch for Captain Jack

Herald Sun - Switched On - - Guide - GEOFF SHEARER

THE Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood, John Barrowman (above) makes for a sweeping, gunslinger-type hero as Capt Jack Harness in his full-length coats and crumpled shirt collars.

But he’s currently gracing the stage in the UK in green tights and peaked feather-topped cap playing the title role in Robin Hood: The Pantomime Adventure.

And last month, he was dressed in revealing dresses and women’s makeup for a limited engagement in a West End revival of La Cage Aux Folles.

Combine those three roles with his work as a judge on the BBC reality-TV casting show How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? (which screens here on Foxtel’s UK-TV), his other appearances on I’d Do Anything and as a celebrity skater on Dancing On Ice, and you get the idea Barrowman is the equivalent of a modern-day showman.

The actor, who married his long-term partner Scott Gill in 2006, recently told the Daily Mail newspaper that he enjoys keeping busy.

‘‘So long as people want to see me, I’m there. I don’t believe in hiding away,’’ he said. ‘‘You can be in the public eye all the time and still have a private life, but the important thing is to keep in touch with the people who put you there.’’

Barrowman was born in Glasgow, Scotland, before moving to Aurora, Illinois, in the US in 1976.

‘‘I knew I was gay when I was 13,’’ he has said. ‘‘Actually, I’d probably begun to realise when I was nine.

‘‘I remember looking at a photograph of a man and a woman, and my eyes went instinctively to the man.’’

Barrowman, 42, is also a recording artist and has released several solo albums. He announced the release date for his new album, February 22, during a Christmas video to fans on his official website.
