Sony, $1399

★★★★ SONY’S new shooter is a quick shot. The company has introduced a semi-translucent mirror to this camera and as a result it can take 10 photos in a second. The Alpha A55 puts this enhancement to good use, not only letting users capture fast-moving subjects, but adding it to a low-light mode that takes six shots at once to create a well-exposed result. The new mirror also allows for sharp video capture and makes this 16.2-megapixel camera smaller and lighter, though it eliminates an optical viewfinder and cuts down on light reaching the sensor. The A55 also has a pivoting, bright LCD screen, full high-definition video recording, light sensitivity to 12,800 ISO, and a 3D Sweep Panorama mode for use with 3D televisions.
