THIS show was sunk. Host Matthew Newton entered rehab after being accused of beating fiancee Rachael Taylor, Ronan Keating’s marriage endured turmoil, and there was talk Natalie Imbruglia was being a diva.
New host Luke Jacobz came onto the show just a week before launch and footage had to be re-edited to remove any trace of Newton.
Things were a mess for The X Factor. And then a funny thing happened . . . people watched it, and voted. It was a success. It seems the shattered Oz Idol fans were more than happy to change stations and embrace the new singing comp.
I mean really, how different are they anyway? People perform, people get voted off, they show a video montage of their ‘‘ journey’’. Kyle Sandilands has been on both programs and on this one, the judges mentor their group of contest- ants (though I’m still not sure what advice Kyle can offer except ‘‘ don’t wear that cos it’ll make you look fat’’).
But there’s been a surprisingly good bunch of talent and heck, haven’t they spent some money on staging for the performances?
