GARY Sinise has impressed with bigscreen appearances in Forrest Gump, Apollo 13 and Of Mice And Men, but he’s more realistic than most about the hazards of unemployment in the acting business.

‘‘ Careers, like rockets, don’t always take off on time . . . the trick is to always keep the engine running,’’ Sinise says of his secret to longevity.

Some assumed Sinise viewed the role of Det Mac Taylor in CSI: NY as a gap-filler in his film schedule. But Sinise, who had never made a long-term commitment to TV before the crime drama, is quick to dispel the notion the job is a sideways or backwards career step.
