YES in­deed, Letters and Num­bers is a re­fresh­ingly re­strained show. You have to love the sheer so­bri­ety of it. There is no shame­less show­boat­ing and no gra­tu­itous time-wast­ing. The quizzing ac­tu­ally takes up the bulk of the time. And even in down­time the pat­ter is ac­tu­ally in­ter­est­ing and in­for­ma­tive. And then there’s the prize: a dic­tio­nary. Could you imag­ine a Deal or No Deal? con­tes­tant re­ceiv­ing a dic­tio­nary as a prize? And then there are the con­tes­tants: so po­lite. In fact, ex­cru­ci­at­ingly po­lite. Per­haps theyDO need just a touch of the An­drew O’Keefe fac­tor.
