The best of 2010

Herald Sun - Switched On - - Games -

LAST year had some memorable gaming experiences. Here are Switched On’s five favourite games for the entire family.

1. SUPER MARIO GALAXY 2 (Wii, M)

THE portly plumber has been head-bopping enemies and rescuing princesses for 25 years, but if Super Mario Galaxy 2 is any indication, he’ll be doing so for at least another 25. Around every corner lies an inventive new twist.

2. FIFA 11 (PS3/360, G)

THE best recreation of the world game yet. FIFA 11 rewards smart, skilful play and the action has more subtlety than before. Plus, while goals may be harder to come by, players have more attacking options, making play more satisfying.

3. DONKEY KONG COUNTRY RETURNS (Wii, M)

THE old-school platformer returns with a modern-day makeover. Join DK and Diddy as they collect bananas, find secrets and work through incredibly challenging levels. This game is full of neat ideas and looks stunning to boot.

4. BEJEWELED 3 (PC, G)

THIS may be known as a ‘‘casual’’ series, but there are plenty of hardcore Bejeweled players out there, and it’s no wonder. It has eight distinct modes to enjoy and is polished.

5. NEED FOR SPEED: HOT PURSUIT (PC/PS3/360, G)

BEATING your best time in a racing game is fun, but beating your friends’ best times is even better. Hot Pursuit taps into this with Autolog, a brilliant online system designed to fan the flames of competition.
