Gotham City’s Finest

Herald Sun - Switched On - - Games -

Among the great jobs in the games industry, Aussie expat Dax Ginn’s would have to be one of the best. He is marketing game manager at Rocksteady Studios, working on Batman: Arkham City. Switched On asked him about his work. What does your role entail? It involves an understanding of the development side of the process and the publishing side and the symbiosis between the two. A development studio spends every minute of every day making the best game they can, whereas the publishing partner looks at the market and all games. So understanding both of those different ways of thinking is just a brilliant position to be in. What inspires you? I take my inspiration from outside of the industry. When I’m reading books or watching movies or listening to music, I’m always thinking, OK does that song or that poem or that fairground attraction have any relevance for game design? Any advice for Aussies looking to work in the games industry? The people who impress me the most are those who are bringing something totally original to the table. Just having an interest in games is not enough; you need to show you can come up with a concept or design. What will blow people away about Batman: Arkham City? I think our strength as a studio is that we’re great at just packing in intensity and intrigue and danger, and really throwing a lot of stuff at the player every step of the way. That’s still our objective in Arkham City — to bring that same attention to detail and level of atmosphere to this sprawling district of Gotham City.
