RHYTHMCORE ALPHA (G) SHINOBI III: RETURN OF THE NINJA MASTER (PG)

DSiWare, $7.50

★★★ This music production software isn’t for the faint of heart. While the basics may be straightforward — choose from a large percussion and synth library to lay down beats and melodies using the looping sequencer — many of the other options will take far more time to master. This will only be of interest to electronic musicians who want to muck around on their DS. It’s cheap, but there’s better software available. Out now.

iPhone, $3.99

★★★ One of the better SEGA Mega Drive re-releases on the iPhone, Shinobi III remains a classic. As ninja warrior Joe Musashi, players leap, slash and throw ninja stars, and even find time for a little horse-riding and surfing. The only sticking point is the controls — virtual buttons and a virtual D-pad will never be as good as the real thing, and using them obscures the screen. Even so, this blast from the past is good value.
