Toshiba, $499 my

★★★ This good thing comes in a small package. Toshiba’s Mini NB550D looks like a netbook — albeit a fashionable one in a bright blue, spotted cover — but its inner workings are a bit smarter than you might expect. It features AMD’s latest dual-core 1GHz processor, with a 374MB graphics processor as a backup. As a result, this netbook is faster than average and, although it still isn’t suited to intensive processing tasks, it will do what you need it to at a greater speed. A 250GB hard drive, three USB ports and multi-touch trackpad don’t hurt, either, and the NB550D adds multimedia expertise with Harman Kardon speakers and an HDMI port.
