SO, HOW to define Dannii Minogue these days? Pop star no longer cuts it (though there’s still an ‘‘ ember’’ of ambition on the music front, she says) and even the gal herself isn’t really sure . . .
‘‘ I was flying to the US to do some film work and I was filling in one of those customs declaration forms that they insist on and in the occupation box I didn’t know what to write down, so I ended up saying I was an entertainer and the customs guy said, ‘ Oh really, entertainer’ so I said to him: ‘ I’m a judge on The X Factor, I have records, I’ve written a book and done some acting and I’ve got a reality TV show coming out . . . if you have a better word, let’s hear it’ and he said, ‘ Entertainer it is’,’’ she says with a big laugh.
That’s the kind of downbeat gal you’ll see when her new three-part reality show, Dannii Minogue, Style Queen starts tonight on Fox 8.
The show concentrates on ‘‘ the most incredible six months’’ of Dannii’s life, leading up to the birth of son Ethan last July. It’s deliberately frenetic, flicking from Melbourne to London as Minogue and her fashion partner (‘‘and best friend’’) Tabitha Somerset Webb, set about establishing their own fashion label.
There are also preps for her next album, and her memoirs, and her own perfume and her pregnancy and her boyfriend Kris Smith, as she keeps calling him. Phew. So, have things slowed down since, now that Ethan is on the scene?
‘‘ No,’’ she hollers. ‘‘ I just get up earlier . . . and go to bed later.’’
And laughing alongside her is Tabitha or Tabs, on her first visit to Australia. It’s a dual promotion for the pair, with the show coming out and their label being launched.
‘‘ It’s a very nervous time,’’ says Minogue. ‘‘ An awful lot hinges on the public getting behind it, because we wanted to make our designs really accessible and Tabs and I have invested so much into the whole thing.’’
The show is a giddy mix of the rarefied world of a celeb, though Minogue seems a little more homespun than most — she actually gives her pals a smooch rather than an annoying air kiss — and there are times she seems genuinely surprised with what life delivers, such as when Shane Warne pops in while she’s buying a pair of ugg boots . . . now that’s a surreal moment.
When the show played in England, Minogue says her fans were crying out for more.
‘‘ I feel sorry for the person who had to edit it,’’ she says. ‘‘ There must have been hours and hours and hours of film . . . if we do another series, it might be years (down the track).’’ Dannii Minogue, Style Queen, Fox 8, Wednesday, 7.30pm
