Tom still toasts Magnum

TOM SELLECK maintains a deep affection for Magnum P.I, even though the TV series cost him the chance to play Indiana Jones in the smash hit Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Selleck had filmed the Magnum pilot when the Indiana Jones role was offered, but producers of the TV project wouldn’t free him to make the movie.

‘‘Steven (Spielberg, Indiana Jones director) and George (Lucas, producer) let me read the script,’’ Selleck said in a recent US interview.

‘‘Until then, I was pretty philosophic because I thought Magnum was probably going to sell and I told them that . . . they made me the offer. I went, ‘Oh, my God!’ because it was all there. It was on paper.

‘‘They held out the offer for about a month. Harrison (Ford) gets sick of this because he’s indelible. He’s Indiana Jones.

‘‘It’s just an interesting story and I’m proud that I didn’t drive my car into a wall. I lived up to my (Magnum) contract and things didn’t work out so badly.’’
