SOFIA Vergara has come a long way in the past decade through fierce determination, perseverance and some mighty self-belief in the face of considerable obstacles.

That has made her a role model for millions of young women across Latin America.

Last month she won a National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP) Image Award for playing Gloria.

‘‘I think it (Hollywood success) gives them hope that they can come to this country (USA), which is very hard, and be able to be successful,’’ Vergara says.

‘‘I am breaking through now in the US, but I’ve been working for 20 years. They (Latin American women) are so happy that they have seen me little by little (achieve success) and now I think this is the best time of my career.

‘‘It never occurred to me that I was going to be an actress or an entertainer. I thought I was going to be a mother and a dentist.’’
