★★★ Sony is Amazon’s main competition in the e-book stakes and the PRS-650 challenges the Kindle. Its big feature is it has a touchscreen. That’s no mean feat as e ink and touchscreens don’t always play well together. Its readability and functionality are excellent. However, the screen is just six inches, so it can get cramped; it does offer a stylus for those with fatfinger disease, though. The Reader also supports music files and, more importantly, offers 2GB storage that can be expanded with an SD card or Sony Memory Stick, potentially reaching 32GB. Unlike Amazon, Sony supports the ePub standard that lets users download books from many stores. One big downside is its lack of wi-fi. For a company such as Sony, that is inexcusable.
